Born in Fremont, California, Gemignani began his culinary journey in 1991 at his brother’s restaurant, Pyzano’s, in Castro Valley. It was there that he honed his skills in pizza making and developed a passion for pizza acrobatics — a discipline in which he competed internationally, winning multiple world titles over more than a decade.

In 2007, he earned international acclaim when he became the first American to win the World Pizza Cup in Naples in the Neapolitan Pizza STG category — a significant milestone in his career that helped establish his global reputation.

Two years later, in 2009, Gemignani opened Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. The restaurant is known for offering a wide range of traditional pizza styles, each made with carefully sourced, high-quality ingredients. He remains deeply rooted in Italian technique, emphasizing authenticity and respect for the craft.

Beyond running restaurants, Gemignani has worked to support and grow the pizza industry through education and writing. He authored The Pizza Bible, a comprehensive guide for both amateurs and professionals, and founded the International School of Pizza, where he trains aspiring pizzaioli in a range of classic and regional styles.

Tony Gemignani continues to be a key figure in the evolution of American pizza, blending mastery, tradition, and innovation in everything he does.
